WELCOME TO MUCAM
“ the life of a museum or an archaeological excavation, such as that of an archive or library, is a treasure which the community must jealously preserve at all costs ”
Nuccio Ordine
MucaM was founded with the aim of “reunite” the context of the Ancient Nomentum, so that mentana regain possession of the original role of centralizing pole, that has belonged to it since ancient times.
The creation of a dedicated museum structure has been thought mostly for two reasons: one hand to enhance the exceptional relicts already present in the territory; on the other hand, due to a desiderable meaningful dialogue with other institutes, to accomodate the numerous materials discovered in the past that today are preserved in museum deposists and private collections.
Therefore, the current exhibition purpose is to represent the starting point of knowledge and re-evaluation of the ancient history of Mentana, in expectant of a future enrichment of the museum collection through other material evidences of our territory, that are still forgotten nowadays.
The museum exhibition hosted inside the wonderful framework of the Borghese Gallery, comes to an end thanks to a section of “The museum outside the museum”, a journey through the historical center of Mentana, where with the support of a map, it is possible to admire the ancient marble pieces originating from Nomentum that, nowadays, adorn and make the alleys and the squares of the medieval hamlet unique.
THE BORGHESE GALLERY
The ancient building was created for two main functions: on the uppr floor there was a room intended to the conservation of cereals and, on the ground floor, there was a stable.
Already certified in the XVI century, by the Orsini family, the building obtained its final structure probably in 1727, under the government of Borghese princes.
It’s still preserved the original flooring of the central nave, that is composed of a cobblestone equipped with a water disposal facility, thanks to the drainage channels; while of the original flooring of the side naves, made by bricks in a herringbone pattern, it only remains a small fragment.
